Best Lakes Within 2 Hours of DFW: Easy Weekend Getaways for North Texas
Best Lakes Within 2 Hours of DFW: Easy Weekend Getaways for North Texas
One of the things I love about living in North Texas is that you don't have to travel very far to feel like you've gotten away.
You can leave Mansfield, Texas on a Saturday morning, spend the day on the water, grab dinner somewhere nearby and still be home before you're completely exhausted from the drive.
And with summer temperatures doing what Texas summer temperatures do, having a lake within a couple of hours can be a pretty great perk.
Whether you're looking for a quick afternoon on the water, a family-friendly beach, a fishing trip, a weekend at the lake house or simply somewhere to watch the sunset, there are plenty of options around DFW.
Here are some of my favorite lakes to put on your South DFW weekend list.
1. Joe Pool Lake — The Easy South DFW Favorite
Approximate drive from Mansfield: 20–30 minutes
If you live in Mansfield, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill or surrounding communities, Joe Pool Lake is probably the obvious first choice.
And sometimes the obvious choice is the right choice.
Joe Pool Lake stretches across parts of Dallas, Tarrant and Ellis counties and offers several public recreation areas, including Cedar Hill State Park, Loyd Park and Lynn Creek Park. There are opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, camping, hiking and paddling. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
There's also the Joe Pool Lake and Walnut Creek paddling trail at Loyd Park, which gives kayakers and paddlers a roughly five-mile route to explore. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
Why I like it:
You don't have to plan an entire weekend around it.
For families in South DFW, Joe Pool can be a “let's go to the lake today” kind of destination.
And if you're considering living in Mansfield, Texas or Grand Prairie, Texas, proximity to Joe Pool is one of those lifestyle perks that doesn't necessarily show up on a listing sheet.
2. Cedar Creek Lake — Lake House Weekend
Approximate drive from DFW: about 1–1½ hours
If your idea of a lake trip is less day trip and more rent a house, bring the family and stay awhile, Cedar Creek Lake is worth a look.
Located southeast of the Metroplex, Cedar Creek Reservoir covers more than 32,000 acres and has a reputation as a popular fishing and recreational lake. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
This is one of those destinations where you can make the lake itself the weekend plan.
Bring the boat.
Bring the fishing gear.
Bring enough food for everyone.
And maybe don't forget the sunscreen.
Why I like it:
It's close enough to DFW that getting there doesn't feel like a major road trip, but far enough away that it can feel like you've actually escaped the Metroplex.
And if you're someone who dreams about having a lake house someday, Cedar Creek is one of the areas I'd put on the list to explore.
3. Lake Ray Roberts — For a More Outdoorsy Escape
Approximate drive from DFW: about 1 hour north
If you're looking for something a little more relaxed and outdoorsy, head north to Lake Ray Roberts.
Ray Roberts Lake State Park offers hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, swimming, paddling, fishing and nature watching. The park has several recreation areas around the lake, including Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
This is a good option when the goal isn't necessarily to spend six hours sitting on a boat.
You can hike.
You can paddle.
You can fish.
You can set up camp.
Or you can simply find a quiet place and enjoy being outside.
Why I like it:
It's a great reminder that a lake day doesn't have to mean a boat.
Sometimes a little hiking, a picnic and some time near the water is exactly what you need.
4. Lake Granbury — Lake Day + Small-Town Charm
Approximate drive from DFW: about 1–1½ hours
If you're looking for a lake getaway where you can combine time on the water with a little exploring, put Lake Granbury on your list.
The lake surrounds the historic city of Granbury, which means you can spend the morning on the water and the afternoon exploring shops, restaurants and the downtown square.
That makes this one particularly appealing for couples or families who don't want their entire weekend to revolve around water activities.
Why I like it:
You get a little bit of everything.
Lake time.
Food.
Shopping.
A walk around town.
And a change of scenery.
It's also a good reminder that sometimes the best weekend getaway isn't the one with the longest drive—it's the one that gives you several things to do once you get there.
5. Lake Whitney — A Little More of a Getaway
Approximate drive from South DFW: about 1–1½ hours
Head southwest and you'll find Lake Whitney.
Texas Parks & Wildlife describes Lake Whitney as a 23,500-acre lake with opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing, camping, hiking and wildlife viewing. Lake Whitney State Park also offers campsites, cabins and screened shelters. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
It's a good option if you want something that feels a little farther removed from the city without committing to a long road trip.
Why I like it:
There's enough to do that you can easily turn a day trip into a weekend.
And if you have kids who need more than a couple of hours of entertainment, that's a pretty important consideration.
6. Lake Texoma — When You Want the Big Lake Experience
Approximate drive from DFW: about 1½–2 hours
Lake Texoma is a different experience altogether.
It's enormous, stretching across the Texas-Oklahoma border, and there are plenty of places to boat, fish, camp and spend the weekend.
Texas Parks & Wildlife lists numerous public access points around the lake, including Eisenhower State Park, along with marinas, campgrounds, boat ramps and other recreation facilities. (Texas Parks & Wildlife)
And Lake Texoma is particularly well known for striped bass fishing.
Why I like it:
If you're looking for a real lake weekend, this is one of the places where you can spend a couple of days and still have plenty left to explore.
It's also a good option for larger groups or extended-family trips.
Just remember that drive times can vary quite a bit depending on which part of the lake you're visiting.
7. Possum Kingdom Lake — For the Scenery
Approximate drive from DFW: around 1½–2 hours
If you're willing to use most of that two-hour window, Possum Kingdom Lake is worth considering.
It's west of Fort Worth and is known for its dramatic scenery, clear water and limestone cliffs.
The lake's Hell's Gate area is one of its most recognizable features, and Possum Kingdom State Park provides opportunities for swimming, hiking, camping, boating and fishing.
This one feels less like “we're going to the lake for the afternoon” and more like “we're going somewhere.”
Why I like it:
The scenery.
If you're tired of looking at rooftops and highways, the rocky shoreline and open water can make the drive worthwhile.
Which Lake Is Right for You?
Of course, the “best” lake depends entirely on what you're trying to do.
Want the shortest drive from South DFW?
Start with Joe Pool Lake.
Want a lake house weekend?
Look toward Cedar Creek Lake.
Want hiking, camping and outdoor activities?
Try Ray Roberts.
Want water plus shopping and restaurants?
Head to Granbury.
Want a family weekend with plenty of activities?
Lake Whitney is worth considering.
Want a big-lake experience?
Look at Lake Texoma.
Want scenery and a little more of a getaway?
Consider Possum Kingdom.
And don't forget that weather, lake levels, park conditions and seasonal restrictions can change. Check the specific park, marina or lake authority before heading out.
Here's the Real Estate Connection
You knew I was going to bring real estate into this eventually, right?
One of the things I encourage buyers to think about when they're choosing where to live is what you actually want to do with your free time.
If weekend boating is a big part of your life, being 25 minutes from Joe Pool Lake may matter more to you than having an extra 200 square feet in your house.
If you want a lake house for family weekends, the communities around Cedar Creek Lake may be worth exploring.
If you want quick access to outdoor recreation but still need to commute into DFW, the location of your home can make a big difference in how often you actually use those amenities.
Because let's be honest.
A recreation area that's technically nearby but requires an hour of traffic each way isn't going to feel nearly as convenient as one that's genuinely easy to access.
Living in DFW Means You Don't Have to Choose Between City and Escape
This is one of the things I love about North Texas.
You can live close to the restaurants, shopping, jobs, schools and conveniences of the Metroplex and still have access to lakes, parks and outdoor destinations without taking a full vacation.
From Mansfield, Texas and Arlington, Texas to Burleson, Texas, Midlothian, Texas and Grand Prairie, Texas, South DFW puts you within reach of several different types of lake experiences.
And sometimes that's worth considering when you're deciding where you want to live.
Because your home isn't just where you sleep.
It's the starting point for the life you want to live.
The Bottom Line
You don't have to drive four or five hours to get a real lake weekend in Texas.
There are plenty of options within roughly two hours of DFW, and each one offers something a little different—from the convenience of Joe Pool Lake to the scenery of Possum Kingdom and the expansive recreation of Lake Texoma.
So the next time someone says, “There's nothing to do around here,” you may want to check the map.
There's probably a lake waiting for you.
Want to Find a Home That Fits the Way You Live?
If outdoor recreation, lake access or weekend getaways are part of the lifestyle you're looking for, let's talk about it before you start house hunting. I can help you compare South DFW communities based on more than just the house itself—including commute, amenities, outdoor recreation and the lifestyle you want to enjoy once you're home.
Sources: Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and local tourism/community resources. Drive times are approximate and will vary based on starting location, traffic and destination within each lake area. Always check current park conditions, access, fees and water conditions before your trip.
