Best Alternate Routes to DFW Airport from Mansfield, Arlington & South DFW
If you've ever been on your way to DFW Airport and suddenly found yourself sitting in traffic on Highway 360, you know how stressful that can be.
You're packed, you've planned ahead, and now you're watching the minutes tick away while wondering if there's another way to get there.
Well, here's something I always tell people who are moving to our area: Getting to DFW Airport isn't necessarily about taking the shortest route. It's about knowing your options.
I'm Stephanie Deeds, Broker/Owner of Point Realty here in Mansfield, Texas. John and I help people find homes throughout Mansfield, Arlington, Burleson, Midlothian, and Grand Prairie.
And for buyers who travel frequently, airport access can be a surprisingly important part of deciding where to live.
So let's talk about the routes worth knowing.
1. Highway 360 North: The Most Familiar Route
For many residents of Mansfield, South Arlington, and Grand Prairie, Highway 360 is a convenient way to reach DFW Airport's South Entrance.
It's a fairly straightforward drive, especially if you live near Broad Street, Debbie Lane, or I-20.
The downside? Highway 360 can experience significant congestion, particularly around I-20, I-30, and Highway 183.
And if there's a major event at AT&T Stadium or Globe Life Field, traffic through Arlington can be another factor.
My advice? Check traffic before leaving, even if you've driven this route a hundred times.
2. Highway 287 to I-20: An Alternative from Mansfield
If you live closer to Highway 287 or Historic Downtown Mansfield, taking Highway 287 north to I-20 east and connecting to Highway 360 may be more convenient than driving across town.
This is especially worth comparing if you're on the western side of Mansfield.
Just remember that this route eventually connects with Highway 360, so it won't help you avoid a major backup farther north.
3. Highway 161: Another Option from Grand Prairie
Here's one route I think is worth keeping in mind.
President George Bush Turnpike, also known as Highway 161, offers another north-south corridor through Grand Prairie.
Depending on traffic, you may be able to connect toward Highway 183 or Highway 114 and approach the airport from a different direction.
This can be particularly useful for residents of Grand Prairie or eastern Mansfield.
However, it involves tolls, and it isn't necessarily shorter.
I would compare the travel time before choosing it.
4. I-35W and Highway 121/183: An Option from Burleson
If you're coming from Burleson, your airport route may look completely different.
I-35W provides access toward Fort Worth, where you can connect with I-820 and Highway 121/183 toward DFW Airport.
Depending on your starting point, you may also want to compare routes involving Highway 287 and Highway 360.
And if traffic is heavy, certain express lanes may offer another option for an additional toll.
The important thing is to compare the actual drive rather than assume one route is always faster.
5. Coming from Midlothian? Plan for the Extra Distance
If you live in Midlothian, Highway 287 will often play an important role in your airport commute.
You may travel north through Mansfield and connect with I-20 and Highway 360, depending on traffic and your exact location.
But because Midlothian is farther south, I always recommend allowing additional travel time, especially during weekday commuting hours.
If you're someone who flies several times a month, this is definitely something worth considering when choosing a neighborhood.
Don't Forget: DFW Airport Has Two Entrances
One thing that surprises some travelers is that DFW Airport has both a North Entrance and a South Entrance.
The South Entrance connects with the Highway 183 area, while the North Entrance is accessed from Highway 114 and I-635.
If there's major congestion or construction near one entrance, your navigation app may recommend approaching from the other.
Both entrances provide access to the airport terminals through International Parkway.
My biggest travel tip: Check your route before leaving, allow extra time for parking and security, and pay attention to current airport construction alerts.
Which South DFW City Is Most Convenient for Airport Access?
This is where things get interesting from a real estate perspective.
Two homes can be in the same city but have very different airport commutes.
For example:
-
Mansfield: Access to Highway 360 or Highway 287, depending on the neighborhood.
-
South Arlington: Convenient access to Highway 360 from many neighborhoods.
-
Grand Prairie: Multiple options, including Highway 360 and Highway 161.
-
Burleson: Access through I-35W and connections on the Fort Worth side.
-
Midlothian: Highway 287 is a primary connection, with a longer overall drive.
And here's why I bring this up.
When you're relocating, it's easy to focus on the house itself.
The kitchen.
The backyard.
The neighborhood amenities.
But if you're catching flights regularly, your drive to the airport can be just as important as your drive to work.
That's why I encourage buyers to look at the entire lifestyle, not just the house.
